Kindle coming to the Android OS

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Okay, now you Android OS fans can claim you have something cool for your phone.

A while back, I wrote about how e-readers were becoming more popular and publishers were moving to take advantage of the market. Then we saw a fight between Sony and Amazon trying to push out their readers faster than one another and any newcomers to the market. Then Amazon went and did something pretty amazing…  They released their Kindle software for iPhones and Blackberrys. A slick move considering I had passed over the e-reader hardware simply because I didn’t want to add another electronic gizmo to my collection. But once the software was available for my Blackberry, well, I was sold. It made my smartphone… smarter.

Recently taking the number two spot in the smartphone arena, phones running the Android OS have become increasingly popular. Amazon took notice of the trend and is now releasing a free version of the Kindle e-reader software for devices running Android OS 1.6 (or higher). This may be a move that will very well solidify their hold on the burgeoning e-book market.

With the new devices that are now available and are coming this summer (HTC Evo, anyone?), Amazon’s move comes just in time to take advantage of the latest and greatest devices.

The new Android Kindle will offer quite a few new features. One of the new features is called Whispersync which will allow you to synchronize your bookmarks, notes, and the last page you read across multiple devices allowing you to transition, for instance, from your Android phone to your home PC quickly. You’ll also be able to browse the Kindle library for new reading material from within the app itself.

Well played, Amazon… Well played.
