Ciji on WCG:Ultimate Gamer, tonight on Sci Fi Channel

When the Reckon Crew first heard about a new reality series on the Sci-Fi channel, there was a collective groan among us as we imagined another Ghost Hunters or a new Who wants to be a Super Hero with a completely mad Stan Lee. Then we heard the title of the new show, Ultimate Gamer, and that peaked our interest. Then Starslay3r told us she was going to be on it. We were hooked.

Admittedly, we tend to worry a bit when we don’t hear from a friend so when Starslay3r disappeared for a month, we thought something might have happened. But coming to find out that one of our Gamettes will be appearing on a show featuring some of the toughest video game competitors out there playing against one another on a reality show, well, we were thrilled for her to say the least. And then the preview clips came out…

Now many of you might think that watching a show about gaming where the competitors pummel one another on Soul Calibur IV might sound dull but if you haven’t heard, that’s not all it’s about. Once the participants compete on, say, Halo 3, they then go out and play paintball against one another. Or if it’s a racing game, they actually get in real cars to see who can maneuver at high speed through an obstacle course. It’s not just about proving who’s the best at a game… It’s about proving you can do it outside of a video game. At the very least, there’s the potential for hilarity when we see the looks on the players’ faces when the “real life” challenges are announced.

When we asked Starslay3r about her experiences on WCG Ultimate Gamer, she had the following to say:

“I’m not really allowed to say much. I can say that it was, the most intense and most awesome gaming experience I’ve ever had. The show definitely put my gaming skills to the ultimate test and if I could do it all over again, I would do it in a heartbeat.”

"I can has tv series?" No, Mr. Cylon, no you can't.

I’ve noticed a seriously disturbing trend on the Sci-Fi channel over the past few years…

We have shows like Farscape, The Invisible Man, Stargate Atlantis, and the most recent casualty, Battlestar Galactica. These were all great shows with some serious fanbases behind them, each with its own potential. Granted, the creators of BSG have always said there was an ending to the series in the mix but if the last half season was an indication, they’re having to rush it now with Sci-Fi breathing down their necks to close out the series.

And there’s more reality shows on the way on Sci-Fi, the only one of which I’m interested in is Ultimate Gamer. Partly because Starslay3r, a recent addition to our Gamettes, is in it, partly because it looks like they’re going to make geeks exercise. That’s always worth a watch. But the rest… Chase? You’re going to put some webcams on the “bad guys” heads and have them chase people who are essentially jogging for dollars? Are you at least going to give the bad guys some baseball bats or is this like a high tech game of freeze tag? And the other one, Estate of Panic? I think I saw this one a long time ago. It was called Fear Factor.

And lest we forget the money they spend on bad Sci-Fi movies.  Movies so bad, they need a new alphabet to score them because they’re too far down to be “B” movies.  Where do they come up with the crap for those movies? Solar flares and killer mosquitoes. Sounds like a fun Saturday lineup. I dare you to find one science fiction fan who will admit to watching more than one of these things.

Now don’t get me wrong. There’s still some good stuff on Sci-Fi but it seems lately like more of the good stuff is getting cancelled in favor of the bad stuff. And a large portion of the recent good stuff comes from other channels. Or other countries. I’m looking at you, Doctor.

Honestly, too many more wrestling and reality shows and we’ll have to have a Sci-Fi Too channel just for the bad Saturday movies.

So here we are.  Hopefully you didn’t type “bladder” and “stream” into a search engine to get here. If you did, you’re still welcome but you’re probably a sick little monkey. You’ll notice that the patented “Bladder Stream” you’re seeing up above this paragraph is a live feed. That’s because StarSlay3r’s going for the “Bladder of Steel” achievement on Rock Band 2 and she’s decided to let us watch. And we like watching, don’t we?  See, I knew it.  Bunch of sick little monkeys.

What is this achievement you ask?  It’s eight hours of rhythm gaming in one straight shot.  No pausing the game or failing on a single song.  If she messes up, she’ll have to start the whole thing all over.  We’re rooting for her, though.

She’ll be playing for eight hours straight so sit back and watch if you want. Just remember, she’s the one in the hot seat. You can always go to the bathroom if you need to…
