MARVEL UNIVERSE ONLINE GETS THE 'SNIKT'
Microsoft Games Studios head Shane Kim confirms the ambitious
Cryptic-developed 360-Vista massively multiplayer superhero game
"has been discontinued."
www.gamespot.com
In July 2006, Microsoft and Marvel Entertainment announced they were
developing an ambitious project, Marvel Universe Online. The title was the first
massively multiplayer online role-playing game designed for cross-play
between Xbox 360 and Windows Vista, and the first MMORPG to feature
characters from the Marvel Comics universe. As outlined in a GameSpot
interview, Marvel Universe Online also marked the first collaboration between
Marvel and developer Cryptic Studios after they settled a nasty legal flap over
Marvel-esque characters in City of Heroes and City of Villains.

But following the high-profile announcements of 2006, the flow of information
about Marvel Universe Online was shut off in 2007. Unconfirmed reports
swirled that the project had been quietly canceled, even though official inquiries
were greeted by Microsoft's standard refrain, "Microsoft does not comment on
rumors or speculation." However, the wall of silence broke at last week's
D.I.C.E. Summit, when Microsoft Game Studios head Shane Kim told
GameSpot that Marvel Universe Online is permanently offline.

"Microsoft and Marvel have decided to discontinue that project," the executive
told GameSpot. "It was a mutual decision." Kim did not go into further detail
about the game's cancellation.

The demise of Marvel Universe Online leaves Sony Online Entertainment's
even more mystery-shrouded DC Comics PC and PlayStation 3 project as the
highest-profile officially sanctioned comic-book massively multiplayer game in
development. (City of Heroes and City of Villains, which feature
character-created superhero characters, remain online.) It also comes shortly
after Marvel ended its agreement with Electronic Arts to codevelop a fighting
game. The company still has longstanding agreements with Activision and
Sega to develop non-MMOG games based on its iconic characters.

NINTENDO JUMPS THROUGH SOME SERIOUS HOOPS!
"Super Smash Bros" Japan sales top 1 million
TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.OS) sold 1.08 million units of its "Super
Smash Bros. Brawl" software in 11 days since its January 31 launch in Japan,
reaching the 1 million mark faster than any other Wii game, a game magazine
publisher said.

Strong demand for its DS handheld gear and Wii console, which features a
motion-sensing controller that allows gamers to direct on-screen plays by
swinging it like a racket, helped Nintendo zip past Sony Corp (6758.T) and
Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) in market value last year.

It took "Wii Fit" seven weeks and "Wii Sports" 11 weeks to sell 1 million units in
Japan, publisher Enterbrain said.

"Wii Fit" and "Wii Sports" are two of the most popular game titles for the Wii,
which went on sale in late 2006.

Nintendo plans to launch "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" in North America on
March 9.

Busy Gamer
teams up with
106.9 and Game
Crazy to bring
another Guitar
Zero tournament
to Victoria, Texas
By Grits
Your favorite bunch of gamers are at it again, this time with 106.9 The Rock to
help promote the Skid Row show coming to Victoria on February 23. The Guitar
Zero tournament is back in town on Friday, February 15. Game Crazy will be on
hand with the system and the know how to help make sure we have another
successful event. The Busy Gamer crew will be out in force to see who has the
Star Power to achieve victory in what is sure to be an exciting and entertaining
tournament.

Once again hosted at the Riverside Multiplex, this Guitar Zero tournament will
have more prizes available to the faithful gamers who come to show off their
mad skills. There will also be categories available for those of our gamers who
don’t necessarily believe they have the skills to win at a full blown tournament.
Come out dressed as your favorite rock star or show us that while you may not
have the skills to beat anyone at Guitar Hero 3, you’ve got the chops to throw
out a prize winning performance.

Crutchboy and Grits will be on hand to organize the event and possibly
demonstrate just how bad it can be when friends let friends play Guitar Hero 3.
And seeing how this Guitar Zero tourney is taking place the day after Valentines
day, they may even be in the mood to kiss some bebes…  So come out and
show your support for your favorite Busy Gamer this Friday at the Guitar Zero
tournament. Or just come out and make fun of us, we just like the attention.

Once again Busy Gamer stormed the Riverside Multiplex to put together
another Guitar Zero competition and while the numbers were lackluster, the
performances were some of the best the Busy Gamer Reckon Crew has seen
yet!  Adding in a couple of new categories, including Freestyle Rockin’, Most
Energetic Performance, and Best Dressed, Busy Gamer and the competitors
came ready to rock. At stake were several sets of tickets to the Skid Row
concert at the Riverside Multiplex and for one rocking Zero and a friend, two
passes to the meet and greet before the concert.

What followed was an impressive display by our Hero Zeroes as each
demonstrated their very impressive skill. It was a close contest, but in the end
only one of our Heroes could be crowned the King Zero. Here’s the listing of
our winners:

1st Place – Jordan Sparks
2nd Place – Matt Guajardo
3rd Place – Gage Ritchey

And last but not least, we had one man who walked away with the title of Best
Dressed, Most Energetic Performance, and Freestyle Zero, Roland Ramirez.
Roland came dressed as a very convincing Slash (featured above) and gave
one hell of a performance, throwing up the horns and banging his head as he
played.
Jeff (Game Crazy), Jordan Sparks (GH3 winner), BusyGamer's St. Tim, Crutchboy and Grits
We’d like to thank everyone who came out, especially Jeff from Game Crazy.
Without his help and his store’s support, these events wouldn’t be possible.
Game Crazy supplied several prizes so that our Zeros wouldn’t go home empty
handed. And we certainly have to thank 106.9 the Rock who so graciously
supplied the Skid Row tickets and meet and greet package. Harley Myles of
106.9’s morning show was on hand when the event began to make certain we
had everything we needed to make this event a success.

Stay tuned for more contests, Busy Gamers and Gamerettes…  We’re just
getting started.

WALK THIS WAY GUITAR ZER0S!
New Guitar Hero gives sweet emotion to Aerosmith fans
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Activision Inc on Friday unveiled a new "Guitar Hero"
video game focusing on the rock band Aerosmith, taking the billion-dollar
franchise in a new direction.

Called "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith," the new game will arrive in stores this
summer, a surprise to many analysts and fans who had expected the next title
to come out closer to the year-end holiday shopping season.

Aerosmith, known for hits such as "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion," is the
top-selling American rock band of all time, with sales of 66.5 million albums in
the United States alone.

The game will feature about 30 Aerosmith songs as well as others from
various acts that have opened for the band. The price has not yet been set.

"The premise is that it's going to cover the 30-plus years of the band, from high
school all the way through the rock superstardom of today," Kai Huang, head of
Activision's RedOctane unit, which guides development of the franchise, told
Reuters in an interview.

In the "Guitar Hero" games, players try to press colored buttons on a
guitar-shaped controller in time with notes cascading down the screen. If the
notes are hit, the song plays properly, and the player earns points.

Since the original "Guitar Hero" was released in late 2005, the series has gone
on to sell more than $1 billion. Depending on the version, a bundle including
the game and a controller costs from $80-$100, while the stand-alone game
costs $40-$60.

When Activision reported quarterly earnings last week, analysts grilled the
company on its plans for the franchise, expressing concern that sales would
slow this year because many players who bought earlier versions with guitars
would opt to buy the lower-price stand-alone game disks.

Huang said Activision had not yet decided whether it would offer a special
controller with the Aerosmith game.

"A NEW DIRECTION"

The focus on a single band marks a new twist for the franchise, whose three
main titles featured dozens of artists spanning classic rock, grunge, metal,
punk and other rock subgenres. Last year, Activision also released "Guitar
Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s" with songs from that decade.

"It's just a completely new way to interact with this music and with Aerosmith,
and we think there's more opportunity to do that in the future," Huang said.

By spotlighting a single band, the company has also come up with a way to
counter rival music game "Rock Band" from Viacom Inc unit MTV and Electronic
Arts Inc, Activision's top competitor.

"Rock Band," which includes drums and a microphone as well as a guitar,
each week has offered new songs that can be downloaded to consoles like
Microsoft Corp's Xbox 360 and Sony Corp's PlayStation 3.

The music industry is eyeing "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" as a way to revive
flagging sales. "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero 3," both launched last fall, have
together sold millions of songs at about $2 each via download.

Speaking of Aerosmith's willingness to work on the project, Huang said: "They
recognize that it can deliver their music in an innovative and new way. It's a new
distribution platform for them."

To recreate the sense of attending an Aerosmith concert, developers held
motion-capture sessions with band members, including energetic frontman
Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry.

"As you play," Huang said, "you're going to be seeing Joe and Steven doing
their moves onstage."
