Movie Review: Iron man 2

Monday, May 10th, 2010

By far, one of the best shots in the film.

So like most fan boys, I was pretty rearing to go to see the new Iron Man movie. Now don’t get me wrong, even though I am a cynical jerk and really bash a lot of the movies I watch… I was actually looking foward to seeing Iron Man 2. The first one was better than I expected, and I really wanted to see the bar raised for this one.

If the bar was raised… someone forgot to tell Marvel because they made a movie that reminds me of that girl in the tourist bar you always see. All hype… no follow through. You know the type, just out to score free drinks. In this sense.. the free drink is a 13 dollar movie ticket, and we all got taken for a ride.

Now don’t get me wrong. The movie is visually stunning. (Like said girl in a bar). It’s pretty to look at, there are scenes that are kind of cool if they lasted long enough. It’s just well… I think I saw more of Tony OUT of the suit than in it. They tried to tackle this plot of Tony Stark dying, but we didn’t care, we wanted some action. The story was a bastardized version of the comic (will we ever learn Marvel… it didn’t go down like that) and we comic fans have to put up with it so Joe Dumbass who never read a comic in his life can approve it…

That’s just it Marvel movie studio… if I NEVER read a comic book before, I guess I’d be impressed (ahem.. wanted anyone?)

On the cool though, Scarlett Johansson’s fine Tom Waits’ lovin’ self was damn gorgeous. They could have casted better, but at least she was something to look at.

First look at Iron Man 2′s Black Widow

Black Widwow, you can tie us up anytime.

Black Widwow, you can tie us up anytime.

Entertainment Weekly’s second annual Comic-Con preview issue will feature new photos of Robert Downey’s Iron Man 2 on the cover, along with Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke.

The first Iron Man that blasted Robert Downey Jr. back to stardom will be returning to the big screen on May 7, 2010. His new battles (with villain Mickey Rourke) will hopefully prove that the success of the first movie wasn’t a fluke. Downey knows the movie isn’t an underdog this time around. “There are a lot more invisible eyes on us now,” he says.

Downey, director Jon Favreau, screenwriter Justin Theroux, and the rest of the creative team are struck upon the idea of introducing two very different foes for Stark. On one side is Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), a fast-talking weapons manufacturer who fancies himself the next Tony Stark; on the other, Vanko, who, while incarcerated in a Russian prison, creates his own battle-suit, which shoots devastating, whip-like beams. Hammer and Whiplash will join forces to take down Downey’s character, Tony Stark.

Rourke tells Favreau, “I don’t want to just play him as a one dimensional pussy, he let me have a cockatoo, who I talk to and get drunk with while I’m making my suit.”

Can Scarlett measure up?

Johansson as Black Widow - Iron Man 2

Johansson as Black Widow - Iron Man 2

Official word is Scarlett Johansson will be playing Black Widow in Iron Man 2 (which started filming this month and set to hit screens in May 2010). It seems that some of the fans are concerned that Johansson isn’t quite visually what they wanted to see in a “Russian Spy”, along with her (from the critics) lack luster acting chops. We’d love to counter that with something fancy (like hey she’s freaking hot), but we’ll have to wait for it to land on the big screen and see how it all adds up. With Jon Favreau directing again, it would come as a huge surprise that he would allow any major deficiencies in such a character as Black Widow.

Originally slated to star as Black Widow was Emily Blunt (Sunshine Cleaning) who later had an obligation to be in Gulliver’s Travels airing on Fox in 2010.

The Iron Man 2 cast will also feature Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, Gwyneth Paltrow returning as Pepper Pots and Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman/rival of industrialist Tony Stark.
