By strategically placing the towers along the paths available, you can force the creatures to
take a more “scenic”, and more deadly, path. This becomes especially important when any
creature actually manages to remove one of your power cores. Once removed, the core is “in
play”, much like a football, and killing the creature holding it means another creature can
simply grab it and make for the exit. The cores eventually drift back to their originating point,
but it’s a slow process and adds another element to play.

Hidden Path has worked hard to make Defense Grid: The Awakening an immersive
experience and it shows. The music is dynamic, changing tempo and pitch based on the
events unfolding on the screen and helping to set the mood. The HUD elements are minimal
and do not distract you from the overall gameplay. There are no health bars or damage
gauges for the creatures, instead the graphics do the job of letting you know just how badly
your towers have injured a creature. For instance, zooming in on a heavily damaged “boss”
showed dense smoke pouring from his hulking body as he tried to make his way to a power
core while his smaller compatriots dropped all around him from a hail of gunfire. That, dear
readers, was truly a very satisfying moment.

Overall, I couldn’t help but be disappointed when the demo was over. Hidden Path had my
attention and had given me a unique gaming experience. I’m looking forward to seeing the
rest of the game when it launches in November and seeing what other surprises Hidden
Path has in store for us.
