Resident Evil 3 Review by Grits
I went to see Resident Evil 3: Extinction last night. I entered the theatre with equal parts excitement and trepidation. You see, I'm a long time fan of the video games and both of the previous movies had done a fine job of capturing the feel of Raccoon City and the characters involved in the series. I had enjoyed both of the previous entries, favoring Apocalypse over the original but I was afraid that stepping away from the series' long time setting might be more than the movie could survive.
Fortunately, I was wrong. Most critics will likely pan this movie, especially if they've never played the video game series. I, on the other hand, felt that the atmosphere that had me sitting on the edge of my seat and jumping at shadows and background noises when I played any of the titles was well captured and well demonstrated in the third movie installment.
Many people who didn't play the video game series will feel the characters are under developed or not given enough back story. The Claire Redfield character for instance (played by the very lovely Ali Larter of Heroes fame) seemed to be added more for the sake of finally having her present in one of the movies, a tip of the hat to the fans of the game. Those of us who played the series know her back story from the games but for those poor souls who haven't experienced the video game are likely to wonder why she was present at all.
In a world that lets movies adapted from video games be produced and directed by the horrid Uwe Boll (don't know who he is? Look him up on imdb.com, you'll see very quickly why I detest the man), this movie is a good example of what should be done to maintain the feel of the games being portrayed.
Bottom line is if you like zombie flicks and you liked any of the Resident Evil games, you'll get your money's worth if you see this in the theatre.
