MYSTERY WHAT?
YOU LOST ME..

"Hidden object" series hit
for holidays
By Scott Hillis
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Glance at a recent computer game sales chart and you'll
see that nestled between the typical combat and science fiction titles lies
something a little different.

That would be "Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst," which was the
third-best-selling PC title in the United States for the week ending in the annual
Black Friday shopping splurge.

Gamers who got lost in super-realistic fare like "Call of Duty 4" and "Crysis"
may scratch their heads, but a growing number of casual players will nod
knowingly at the mention of the leading example of the "hidden object" genre.

"Hidden object" titles are virtual scavenger hunts in which players hunt for items
against minutely detailed backdrops, often racing to beat a clock or reveal clues
to an overarching mystery.

Seattle's Big Fish Games essentially defined the genre with the "Mystery Case
Files" series two years ago. The company estimates that 100 million people
have at least sampled trial versions of the games since then.

The fourth installment, "Madame Fate," launched last month for download on
Big Fish's Web site, sold 100,000 copies in six weeks -- big numbers for a
casual game.

Unlike a hard-core game franchise like "Call of Duty" where each sequel
overshadows its predecessors, the debut of the new "Mystery Case Files" title
rekindled interest in past games. Hence the strong retail sales of
"Ravenhearst," the third title in the series.

"When it hits retail during the holidays, people recognize the brand and buy it,"
Big Fish founder Paul Thelen said in an interview.

"Our best guess -- we don't have actual data -- is that it's people who have
played or bought 'Case Files' online and now, with the holiday coming, they
want to give that to friends or relatives," Thelen said.

Another difference between "Mystery Case Files" and a big title for a gaming
console like Sony's PlayStation 3 is that a big console game usually makes a
splashy debut and then sees sales taper off.

Big Fish, however, gets more mileage out of "Mystery Case Files" by first
posting it for download and then offering it more broadly in shops and on other
Web sites several months later, which leads to a second spike in sales.

The first game took about six months to program, but Big Fish, not wanting to
rush what it sensed could be a hit, spent more than twice as long before that
polishing the design.

"We initially came up with concepts that didn't work well. At first it was a kids'
game, and that didn't work well with audiences," Thelen said.

Big Fish has cranked out four "Mystery Case Files" games in two years, but that
pace is set to slow a bit as developers get more ambitious.

"We would like to get one out every year because it is episodic," said Paul
Handelman, head of business development for Big Fish. "We are really trying to
think of ways to bring the whole brand together."

Like all success stories, "Mystery Case Files" has spawned ranks of imitators,
and even Big Fish has rolled out other hidden object games, such as its
"Hidden Expedition" series, and a new one featuring 3D, 360-degree scenes in
London.

"Mystery Case files" mainly appeal to women aged 35 to 50, but a mobile
version launching in partnership with Glu Mobile next year should appeal to
younger players who are more likely to play games on their phones.

"We're pushing the limits in terms of what has ever been done on mobile, in
terms of the graphics quality, use of the networks, and game design,"
Handelman said.

Chuck Norris doesn't

Chuck Norris sues, says his
tears no cancer cure
By Christine Kearney
NEW YORK (Reuters) -
Tough-guy actor and martial
arts expert Chuck Norris

s
ued publisher Penguin on
Friday over a book he claims
unfairly exploits his famous
name, based on a satirical
Internet list of "mythical facts"
about him.
Penguin published "The Truth About Chuck Norris: 400 facts about the World's
Greatest Human" in November. Author Ian Spector and two Web sites he runs
to promote the book, including www.truthaboutchuck.com, are also named in
the suit.

The book capitalizes on "mythical facts" that have been circulating on the
Internet since 2005 that poke fun at Norris' tough-guy image and super-human
abilities, the suit said.

It includes such humorous "facts" as "Chuck Norris's tears cure cancer. Too
bad he has never cried" and "Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits," the suit
said, as well as "Chuck Norris can charge a cell phone by rubbing it against his
beard."

"Some of the 'facts' in the book are racist, lewd or portray Mr. Norris as engaged
in illegal activities," the lawsuit alleges.

Norris, who rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s as the star of such films as
"The Delta Force" and "Missing in Action," says the book's title would mislead
readers into thinking the facts were true.

"Defendants have misappropriated and exploited Mr. Norris's name and
likeness without authorization for their own commercial profit," said the lawsuit.

The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks unspecified monetary
damages for trademark infringement, unjust enrichment and privacy rights.

Norris, whose real name is Carlos Ray Norris, claims in the suit he is
protective of what his name is associated with. He has recently made U.S.
headlines for backing Republican presidential candidate former Arkansas Gov.
Mike Huckabee.

A spokesman for Penguin, owned by Britain's Pearson, was not immediately
available for comment.

GTA IV - Rumor Control

UK trade mag MCV says
Grand Theft Auto IV is set
for an April 25 launch
www.gamespot.com
What we heard: The original release date for Grand Theft Auto IV was
announced by Peter Moore at Microsoft's E3 2006 press conference. When that
date (October 16, 2007, in North America) proved to be too optimistic, Take-Two
officially delayed the game, saying it would instead arrive during the second
quarter of its fiscal year 2008, which runs from February through April next year.

Last month, rumors that the game would be delayed again flared up after
comments from Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick at a financial summit
were widely misreported. Zelnick himself came out to squash those rumors
publicly, reiterating that the publisher would still have the game on shelves
sometime within the previously announced three-month window.

Now MCV is reporting that Grand Theft Auto IV has a release date and that it will
just barely make it inside the release window. According to the site, GTAIV will
launch in the UK on Friday, April 25. As for where that information comes from,
MCV cites "senior industry sources" in the story's deck head and "sources
close to the game's publisher" in the body text.

Unnamed sources are always tricky. Beyond simply assessing if a source is in
a position to know the truth of any given situation, there is also an issue of
whether or not the information being passed along is finalized or still in flux.

MCV has previously cited unnamed sources with varying degrees of accuracy.
Last year unspecified sources told the publication the Wii would debut for £149
in the UK by November 24, 2006; the system actually launched December 8 of
that year and cost £179. More recently, this week's announcement that the 2008
E3 Media and Business Summit would be held in the Los Angeles Convention
Center ran contrary to an unsourced MCV story from July stating that the event
was leaving the LA area entirely.

In MCV's defense, unnamed sources have also served the site well on several
occasions. MCV was the first to report that Vivendi Universal Games was
acquiring Cold Winter developer Swordfish Studios, and the deal became
official the next day. Unspecified industry sources also helped MCV nail down
the release date for the Godfather games when Electronic Arts was still
keeping mum.

The rumored April 25 UK launch date for Grand Theft Auto IV is in the last week
in Take-Two's second fiscal quarter. Given Take-Two's insistence on meeting
its release window for Grand Theft Auto IV and how much the company has
riding on the game, it does make sense to give the developers as much time
as possible to polish it up before the game ships out.

However, it's not uncommon for publishers to shuffle release dates around,
especially four full months before a game is supposed to launch (keep in mind
that Grand Theft Auto IV was only two months away from its original release
date when Take-Two delayed it). MCV's source may be well connected, and
April 25 may be the publisher's current UK target, but that doesn't necessarily
mean the release date is set in stone just yet.

Zelnick was implying as much yesterday in a conference call following the
release of Take-Two's quarterly financial report. Responding to a question from
an analyst, Zelnick said it wasn't the publisher's intention to be vague, adding,
"We'll announce the date when we have the date."

Ron Paul rallys on World of
Warcraft
By Crutchboy
This is quite a turn for politics I'd say, since when do candidates turn to World of
Warcraft for presidental support? Ohh I guess since yearly WoW subscriptions
are approaching 10 million worldwide...not a bad idea to reach an audience.
And Statistics say  greater than 55% of the game players are old enough to
vote! But I play horde so if  they come to my server, I'm planning a counterstrike
dammit. WOOT!

Here's what
wowinsider.com had to say about it: Republican presidential
candidate Ron Paul's internet regiment has come to World of Warcraft-- a
group of his supporters are planning to form a guild on Whisperwind and do a
march from IF(Ironforge) to Stormwind (which means they'll probably be
Gnomes or Dwarves, which is too bad, because I liked the idea of "Trolls for
Ron Paul") on New Year's Day at 8:30pm EST.

Sony to add Skype Web
phone function to PSP: Nikkei
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Sony Corp plans to add an Internet phone function
to its PlayStation Portable (PSP) game player in cooperation with eBay unit
Skype to stir up demand, the Nikkei business daily said on Saturday.

The PSP has trailed Nintendo Co Ltd's DS handheld gear in sales since their
launches three years ago as DS's casual and innovative games proved a
smashing success in gaming population expanding beyond young males to
women and mature users.

By downloading Skype's software, which is expected to become available as
early as this month, PSP users can make free Web-based phone calls with
other PSP users and the users of PCs equipped with Skype software, the
Nikkei said.

The new service is designed for the latest PSP model launched in September,
the newspaper said.

Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka declined to
comment on the report, but said the game unit of the electronics and
entertainment conglomerate is studying ways to add value to the PSP.

Xbox Live falters
over holidays

Boo. Party foul.
SEATTLE Reuters - Microsoft Corp. said Friday it will give Xbox 360 owners a free
video game to make up for poor performance over the holidays by the system's
online hub.

Gamers log on to the Xbox Live Web site to buy games, television shows and
movies to load onto their consoles, and interact with other players.

Video game blogs such as Joystiq recently reported that users had a slew of
problems with the site over the holidays, including trouble signing in,
downloading media and getting matched with online opponents.

"We are disappointed in our performance," wrote Marc Whitten, general
manager of Xbox Live, on the Xbox 360 support Web site.

Whitten said record-breaking traffic and new-member sign-ups caused the
"intermittent Xbox Live issues."

Microsoft, which says it has sold more than 17.7 million Xbox 360 consoles
since the system's November 2005 debut, bulked up its capacity for gamers on
Xbox Live both before the release of the wildly popular "Halo 3" and ahead of
the holiday season.

The software maker did not publicly detail the problems Xbox users faced or
the steps it has taken to fix the issues.

Whitten said the company will give a free game from the Xbox Live Arcade, but
did not say which titles will be chosen, or when.
