"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from
over the years about how he helped them become a
doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them,"
Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional
characters and carry out their adventures with the help
of complicated rules. The quintessential geek
pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and
later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's
still growing in popularity.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife,
Gygax is survived by six children.

Advanced Dungeon and Dragons Players Handbook by Gary
Gygax 1st ed. published 1978.
Editor’s note: There’s a ton of quips I could make about Gary’s passing.  A
“failed his saving throw” joke wouldn’t seem all that inappropriate when talking
about the creator of Dungeons and Dragons but the honest truth is that I’m
honestly saddened by this loss. Without his works, there’s a part of my
imagination that may have never been unleashed. I’m sure I won’t be the only
role-playing geek “hoisting a tankard” in his honor this evening. Here’s to you,
Sir Gygax...  You will be missed.
